I found this bad connection to be a defect and the controller was exchanged for a new one under warranty, but it has the exact same problems so I'm assuming they will all have this. I now use it with the PC and then the distance between controller and receiver is less than 1 meter and I no longer suffer from a dropped connection.

I had the receiver next to the TV and then I used the controller on the couch, but then the connection often drops.
